Roasting Your Own Coffee

admin | September 25th, 2009 - 10:13 pm

It is possible to roast your own coffee and there are two different types of coffee roasters. The easiest and least expensive machine is a fluid bed roaster also called a hot air coffee roaster. This machine roast coffee in the same way as you would pop popcorn. This is excellent for those wanting to quickly and easily roast coffee.

A more advanced version of roasting coffee that also is more expensive is by using a drum roaster. Commercial coffee roasters will use drum roasters as they provide more even and uniform roasting. Unlike the fluid bed roaster the drum roaster takes longer to roast the coffee and you cannot easily check on your coffee to determine when to stop roasting.

Regularly roasting your own coffee isn’t for the casual home brewer. Getting your own drum roaster is a big time purchase of one of the more advanced coffee maker accessories.
